Cup Fever!

Well Plymouth Argyle are out of the FA Cup after a great run that has made everyone proud (even those of who are more often found supporting Liverpool!) Even in defeat they were plucky, determined and relentless, which I'm sure all of the Green Army appreciated even though being knocked out is upsetting.

Of course, not everyone likes football, or any sport for that matter. But it's hard to ignore the feel-good factor brought to SW Devon by Argyle's recent success. We've been mentioned on TV a lot more then normal, with sports personalities commenting on the outstanding beauty of the area and the warmth and friendliness of the locals.

It's no secret to those of us lucky enough to live here that SW Devon is possibly the most beautiful part of the country, and although tourists discover it when they venture down here, it would be great if we could promote the area more effectively.

Why is it that Devon and Cornwall are all but forgotten by many? Is it because we need better transport links or because it's simply too far from the rest of the country? Plymouth and the surrounding areas are becoming more and more impressive and the future certainly looks positive. Should we be trying to draw in more tourists to capitalise on the modernisation and restructuring taking place? How should we best do this?

I'd love to hear your thoughts.

Gary

Well said Anonymous! – I agree that the whole region should be opened up by lots of cheap flights – but hang on……

We can’t do that because flying is mega bad and we are already being taxed on using this type of transport. In fact, David Cameron promised only this week that the Conservatives are going to load even more taxes on frequent flyers if he gets into power. This is in spite of the fact that planes contribute no more than 5 per cent of our carbon emissions, that the UK produces no more than 2 per cent of global emissions, and in its excellent documentary – The Great Global Warming Swindle – scientists have demonstrated that it is in fact the sun and solar activity that is responsible for climate change after all. But in spite of this, at the moment flying is being discouraged so we can not attract visitors this way.

What about roads then? No – we can not put any more of our countryside under tarmac or encourage the irresponsible use of cars – we have our carbon footprint to think of, or we won’t be able to save the world. So we can not bring visitors into Devon this way.

Railways could bring lots of people here – but here again the government have reduced our services of late and will not fund an increase in lines or rolling stock of the kind we would need to make a difference.

So sorry – there is nothing we can do to attract more tourists. Indeed it would be irresponsible of us to even try in view of our adherence to current green ideology.

Never mind – if we do not clog up our towns with tourists, it will be all the more pleasant for the rest of us who live here, dont you think?
