Trident
For the moment it looks like Trident's future is secure- we will be commissioning new nuclear missiles over the coming years. Personally I am in favour of this. With the possibility of rogue states acquiring nuclear weapons never far away, it would be unwise to leave ourselves vulnerable and dependent on France and the United States for protection.
That's not say that I think we should discount disarmament as a possibility in the future and I think Britain should be standing strong within the discussions of non-proliferation and eventual global disarmament.
Obviously the Dockyard's future is tied up in all this which makes it a hot topic locally. Some are passionate about Devonport and the role it plays within the local area. Others dispute it's importance and are fundamentally against it continuing to operate.
What do you think? Is Devonport a vital part of Plymouth and SW Devon? or should we now be focusing our energies elsewhere?
I'd love to hear your thoughts.
Gary.

Cup Fever!
Well Plymouth Argyle are out of the FA Cup after a great run that has made everyone proud (even those of who are more often found supporting Liverpool!) Even in defeat they were plucky, determined and relentless, which I'm sure all of the Green Army appreciated even though being knocked out is upsetting.
Of course, not everyone likes football, or any sport for that matter. But it's hard to ignore the feel-good factor brought to SW Devon by Argyle's recent success. We've been mentioned on TV a lot more then normal, with sports personalities commenting on the outstanding beauty of the area and the warmth and friendliness of the locals.
It's no secret to those of us lucky enough to live here that SW Devon is possibly the most beautiful part of the country, and although tourists discover it when they venture down here, it would be great if we could promote the area more effectively.
Why is it that Devon and Cornwall are all but forgotten by many? Is it because we need better transport links or because it's simply too far from the rest of the country? Plymouth and the surrounding areas are becoming more and more impressive and the future certainly looks positive. Should we be trying to draw in more tourists to capitalise on the modernisation and restructuring taking place? How should we best do this?
I'd love to hear your thoughts.
