Fight to save post office takes to the streets

On Friday morning (13 June) the fight to save Underwood post office will take to the streets when 40 people will march from Underwood to the post office in the Ridgeway to demonstrate how difficult it will be for elderly people and mums with buggies to get to the post office if Underwood is closed.

The demonstration has been organised by Gary Streeter MP who chaired a packed public meeting two weeks ago at which over 300 members of the community expressed their anger at the proposal to close Underwood post office.

“The idea is to take pictures of the difficult terrain as we walk to show how narrow or non-existent pavements, steep slopes, busy roads will make it nigh impossible for certain people to get from Underwood to the Ridgeway,” said the South West Devon MP. “For people in wheelchairs it is a complete no-no.”

“The post office management seem to believe that there is a 10 minute bus service running along Underwood, but there is not,” he added, “it was hourly and was stopped in January. The nearest service is the 22 over 350 yards away also up difficult terrain.”

The day will be capped off by a further public meeting at St Mary's Hall at 7pm at which the arguments against closure will be put to representatives of the post office management, and the community will get a chance to have their say.

Mr Streeter said that more than 40 people want to march on Friday morning, but they would be limiting numbers to minimise inconvenience to other road users.
