MP RAISES CONCERN AT SCHOOL FUNDING FIGURES


South West Devon MP Gary Streeter has expressed his frustration at the school funding figures released by the government today.

The average for an English LEA for the next financial year is £4066 per pupil and yet both Plymouth on £3889 and Devon on £3707 fall well short of the national average.

“This is unacceptable,” says Gary Streeter, “because Plymouth has areas of great deprivation and needs more help than many areas, not less, and Devon has to cope with unique problems of scarcity, not least in maintaining small village schools and grappling with expensive school transport.
Our children are worth just as much as any pupil in the north,” the MP complained.

“Once again the westcountry is being short-changed. It is time for a complete overhaul of the system and a much fairer settlement for this area.”
