Visit to 42 Commando - Bickleigh

I very much enjoyed talking to the young marines and listening to their experiences in their numerous roles. They were kind enough to let me have a go on some of the weapons. The tripod mounted machine gun – like a Gatling gun from a western movie – was easily my favourite.

Upgrading our rail, road and broadband infrastructure in the South West is our highest priority. That is why I asked the PM about it today and asked him to receive a delegation from the peninsula to discuss the new plan that all local authorities, business leaders and Local Enterprise Partnerships in Cornwall Devon and Somerset have put together to seek government backing. I hope this meeting will take place before Christmas.

Commons vote on abortion.

Today the Commons voted on a motion brought forward by my colleague Fiona Bruce that sought to make it illegal to abort babies on the grounds of their sex, which, is happening in our country today.

Naturally, I support this strongly and have been working with Fiona on it. We were keen for a vote to be recorded to demonstrate strength of feeling. Under our rules, to record a vote somebody has to shout “no” and there must be two tellers for each side. I agreed to be one of these tellers to ensure that parliament’s disgust at this practice was properly recorded. I hope this explains why my name does not appear on the list of those supporting this motion even though I strongly support it.

September sitting at Westminster

Following an August of constitieuncy based activity in Devon, Gary was back at Westminster for the short two week sitting from September 1st. Amid the backdrop of the Scottish independance referendum the usual round of parliamentary questions and debates resumed briefly while busy House staff tried to finish refurishments and decorations. As well as various private meetings Gary chaired a session of Wesminster Hall debates and asked a parliamentary oral question.
